A volunteer's story
Prior to volunteering with Care and Repair I was a retired teacher, caring for my mother until her death in 2013.
I learned about the Care and Repair service through a leaflet which had been left at a woman’s group at my church. I enjoy DIY and the challenge of fixing something – although I’m not always successful – so I decided to apply.
It’s great getting to know the clients I visit and knowing the small things I do for them can make a big difference. I think we sometimes undervalue the simple things – but they can have an impact on elderly and disabled people who can’t do things for themselves.
I would recommend volunteering to anyone who is interested. It’s a way of giving something back to your community and helped me develop new skills, meet new people and has given me a sense of purpose and satisfaction.
